Presidentʼs Message
January 1, 2014 Ralph Borcherds

I hope this newsletter finds everyone safe, healthy, happy and well recovered from all of the recent festivities. The next few months are going to be busy and fun. Our January speaker is kind of a NCSI kind of guy. He’ll be talking about radios and and spy stuff. See Ralphs article below.  February will be Ken Miller. He will be talking about CW. You may remember him from a bit on the Tonight Show of “what is faster, Morse Code or texting?” Also on February 1st will be the RATS T-Hunt. Bring a picnic lunch for afterward we be meeting at a park. March of course is the Desert RATS Hamfest. Lots to do, many ways to get involved in the club.

Speaking of getting involved, here are a few ways;

  • We could use support for the hospital response team. We have a team that will respond to Eisenhower Medical Center should they lose internal communication or any other disaster. Please drop me a line if you are interested.
  • Attend a board meeting. Meetings are open to all members and are held the first Tuesday evening of each month. You can see how the club is run and even give your 2 cents worth of input. New ideas are always welcome.
  • Do you have a skill that you can share? At the January meeting I will be passing around a sign up sheet for a new feature for the newsletter. It will be kind of an Elmer list. I do a lot of digital communications. I work the bands using PSK, JT65 and some RTTY, interested? My name will be first on the list. Are you big into antennas? CW operations? Electrical? Computers? Are you willing to share your knowledge? Add your name. I know some of you are professionals. I don’t expect you to come out and rewire a house for free. But someone may ask which wire is hot, the black or the white? Or what is the difference between hot and neutral in a home AC circuit:

One last thing; Dues are due. You can pay Chis at the meeting or go to desertrats.am. Fill out the form and mail it in or do it on line using Pay Pal. Easy as that.

Also, we just might be pulling the winning ticket on that Kenwood 2M/440 radio at the next meeting. We just need to sell a few more tickets. Where will be the usual goodies to raffle off as well.
