ARES Update
September 6, 2014 Ralph Borcherds

ARES Update:  We will have forms at the meeting for those of you that wish to help with the Emergency Hospital Communications group to gain access to Eisenhower Medical Center.  The form is to get you a badge so that you will be able to enter the facility after hours without jumping through the security hoops.

We will be holding a training at EMC to train everyone on the terminology that the hospital uses and what they mean.  Also you will be trained on message handling within the hospital area and how the NETS will run at the hospital and all the frequencies that we will be using at the hospital.  We will also be doing more practice drills at the hospital and participate in the two emergency drills that the hospital has to run each year.

We will be having a few presentations this season from the ARES training that occurred Aug 5.

We are asking people to start to listen to the National Traffic System nets that are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays on the PAPA System repeater on Edom Hill. Repeater is 445.640 Neg offset PL 107.2 If you have D-Star the repeater is 447.140. We will be having a presentation latter in the season on NTS.

The other big presentation is one on NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging System).  This allows you to send text via Ham Radio.  If you have a laptop with FLDIGI and FLMSG installed and an HT you can use this system.  Feel free to play with it.  You can get the downloads at http://w1hkj.com/download.html and watch a basic setup video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWZ2vKWSilE.  This presentation will be in October so play with it so that you can get all your questions answered.
