ARES Technology

Ham Radio Technology Page

On this page you will find information about Ham Radio related technology that we as the Coachella Valley ARES group will be using.

Broadband Hamnet™:

This technology is something that will be used by us. Please spend some time and familiarize yourself with this. Check out the Broadband Hamnet™ website for more details about this technology.

Broadband-Hamnet™  is a high speed, self discovering, self configuring, fault tolerant, wireless computer network that can run for days from a fully charged car battery, or indefinitely with the addition of a modest solar array or other supplemental power source. The focus is on emergency communications.

The way that we will be using this is as follows:

  1. Voice over IP (VoIP).  This will allow us to use telephones during a deployment to communicate with each other and have conference calls.
  2. Real-time Video:  We will be able to use real-time video feeds so that if we just need to monitor a location but do not have the personal to put there we can watch that area and respond as needed.
  3. File Sharing:  On this private network we can have a server setup to allow the sharing of files between groups and to multiple groups at the same time.  These files will be able to be printed and added to the after action reports.
  4. Form Routing:  This is a very important aspect of the Hospital Support group.  We will be able to route forms between departments quickly and always have a copy of the communication in electronic format with date/time stamps that we can print and put into the after action reports.
  5. There are more options we have and as new technology/software is developed for this network we can use it.

Take a look at the following web sites for more information about Broadband Hamnet™.

Narrow Band Emergency Messaging

This is a quick a easy way to get up and running until all the other pieces are put into place for us to use.  This system uses a laptop with speakers and a microphone with an HT radio.  The software that runs on the laptop is FlDigi and FlMsg.  When configured correctly these two pieces of software allow you to send text only data to someone else and they can then respond.
