January 2018 President Message

January 2018 President Message
January 10, 2018 Ralph Borcherds

I hope everyone had a great holiday season. I spent Christmas with family and New Years with friends. Was Santa good to you? Some new Ham gear? Or did you get a lump of coal?

As there was no December RATS meeting, there is not much to rehash about that.

By the time you read this, our classes for the Technician License will be underway. It looks like we have 30 students signed up to take the class. That is the largest yet and includes quite a few women and one 10 year old. The classes are being held at the LDS church in Bermuda Dunes on Wednesday evenings. Testing will follow on February 17th. The testing session will be open to all classes and upgrades, so now is your chance to step up to General or Extra.

Upcoming Speakers

Our January 2018 meeting will have as a guest speaker our very own Rick Fearn K6VE. Ham operators have a tendency to step on each others transmissions, doubling, causing QRM etc etc. At events like the Golden Globes, do you have any idea how many wireless mics, HTs, mobile radios etc etc are in that one building? How do they keep it all straight? Fresh from the 2018 Golden Globe Awards, Rick will give us the inside scoop.

February’s Speaker: CHP Officer Mike Redford (speaker for the CHP) to talk on distracted

driving. Does this include microphones and HTs? Come find out.

March Speaker: 140 Hiking trails Around Palm Springs – Philip Ferranti. From easy trails to the more difficult ones. Most of them within reach of local repeaters. Think of the fun you could have.

Some more or less local events coming up:

Yuma Hamfest Feb 16/17. http://www.yumahamfest.org/

International DX Convention, Visalia CA. April 20-22. http://www.dxconvention.org/

Talk it up. Maybe you’d like to go, you might find someone to ride share with.

See you on the bands. 73
