Jim Brock – My recent experiences on Disaster Relief Operations with the American Red Cross

Jim will discuss his experiences with the Red Cross Disaster Services Technology while on deployment in Puerto Rico after Hurricanes Irma and Maria caused widespread devastation to the island. Jim’s role was as a Computer Operations associate. His assignments included working computer support at the Disaster headquarters and in the field as a member of a VSAT team. VSAT (very small aperture terminal) is a two-way satellite ground station with a dish antenna that is smaller than 3.8 meters.) VSAT teams provided satellite internet access in areas without any communications so that people could communicate with family and friends. He also had the opportunity to learn about the importance of amateur radio during disasters.

Jim was also deployed to Ventura County at the beginning of the Thomas fire.
