Presidents Message November 2019

Greetings all. The bands have been crazy. 20 Meters has been kind of dead however this morning I worked about 25 stations on 12 M and 10 M. No DX, but filling in the blanks for Worked All States on those bands using FT8. Go figure.

Last month’s meeting was very interesting. Clifford KK6QMS gave a great presentation on the logistics of setting up for Burning Man. If you missed it (the debates were on that night, so you’re forgiven), Burning Man is a free spirit event in the Nevada desert, miles from nowhere. In fact, I think it’s about 40 miles from nowhere. Roughly 80,000 folks show up for the week-long event and they need a certain amount of services. Clifford explained what it takes to set up the communications for such an undertaking. From AREDN mesh, WiFi and emergency comms. Thanks for a great presentation Clifford.

This month’s speaker is Dennis W6DQ. He is traveling down from the Ridgecrest area to talk about the dismantling of the 250,000 Watt Voice of America transmitter in Delano CA, Dennis is a long time ham and Collins radio collector. This fits right in as the VOA transmitter was built by Collins. The transmission lines and antenna farm to support such a transmitter are massive. This is a not to be missed talk.

See you on the bands.

Glenn WB6RLC
