When the Grid Goes Down: Managing Emergency Power Sources, Loads and Storage
Presented by Marty Woll N6VI
Natural disasters can leave large segments of a region’s population without commercial power. If you are impacted, how will you meet your basic power needs, let alone run your radios? This presentation helps an operator to plan for limited-power situations.
The discussion will start with equipment selection and defining your communications mission. You will then learn how to develop a basic a power budget and to modify it for different conditions. From there the presentation will address battery types and selection; wiring, distribution and fusing; generator and battery safety and conclude with comments on alternative power sources (solar and wind).
Marty Woll N6VI has been in Amateur Radio for forty-nine years and is a frequent speaker at radio clubs and conventions. Marty is serving in his ninth year as ARRL’s Vice Director for the Southwestern Division.
The joint meeting with RACES, ARES and CVARC will be held at 7PM at the Palm Springs Fire Dept Training Center, 3000 E Alejo, Palm Springs. Hope to see you all there
